Rick Shaefer

Fairfield, CT

Shaefer’s richly detailed charcoal drawings interrogate the the ties that bind the natural and human worlds.

Rick Shaefer’s dynamic artwork includes large, often life-size, charcoal on vellum drawings that capture our attention through their boldness and the arch tension they produce between the gestural and controlled mark making. This sea of line work, reminiscent of Rembrandt’s etchings or Durer’s woodcuts, is what the viewer’s mind instinctively reads as a richness of detail. The life-size drawing of this rhino was, in part, a contemporary homage to Durer’s famous woodcut of the same Indian variety that he drew from various secondhand accounts.
